Dearborn Sign

What's the perfect time for an orchid show? The middle of winter. From February 5-8 orchid lovers from the area descended upon Holmdel, NJ for the annual Deep Cut Orchid show, held at the Dearborn Market.

Dearborn greenhouse

The market has a large greenhouse attached to their gourmet market and deli. Set up took place during the 20 degree weather that we have been enjoying so much of this winter.

Stony Brook Orchids exhibit

Susan got Stony Brook Orchids exhibit assembled with her usual flair.

Dendrobium blue ribbon winner

A highlight of the Stony Brook exhibit was the spectacular Dendrobium Orchidom Blush that crowned the display. This plant is two feet tall, with eleven bloom spikes, and lots of flowers. It got a blue ribbon, which was a thrill since we haven't grown many dendrobiums. This dendrobium was grown in the peat/perlite orchid mix that we rely on at Stony Brook Orchids.

Phal. Sweet Valentine

This Doritenopsis Chian Xen Sweet Valentine won best phalaenopsis in show.

Phal. yellow

Susan's Doritenopsis Chian Xen Queen 'JB18' was a big hit with the crowd. The plant has a strong branching habit. We sold several with five or more branches. They put on a show when in full bloom.

Cattleya

Susan has had great success growing cattleyas in our mix. This Lc. Chan Hsiu Jewel 'Sun May' won a blue ribbon for Stony Brook Orchids.

Phal. Mini Mark 'Holm'

Here's a close up of Phal. Mini Mark 'Holm'. The flower is less than an inch across, and the plant itself is only 4 inches wide. It's a delightful miniature phalaenopsis that can work well on a window sill or a terrarium.

Duffin exhibit

This is Lois Duffin's display. In the center of the exhibit is the dendrochilum that won best in show.
