CJOS November 2024 Newsletter

Welcome Everyone!

Autumn is in full swing, and with it comes cooler weather and stunning fall colors 🍂. Thanks to a sunny, dry season with little rain, this year’s color palette 🍁 has been especially vivid. If you’ve had the chance to visit local parks, like Mercer County Park, you’ve likely witnessed some breathtaking scenery that’s perfect for photos!

With Thanksgiving just two weeks away, we at CJOS want to take a moment to express our gratitude to all of our members. Your contributions have helped make this society what it is today, and we couldn’t be more thankful for each one of you. We hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful 🌽Thanksgiving 🎃, and a joyful start to the holiday season, however you choose to celebrate!

As we enter the indoor growing season, it’s time to make sure our orchids and tropical plants are snug and well-cared for during the cooler months ahead. Let’s continue to nurture our plants and support one another as we keep growing together. Happy gardening, and Happy Thanksgiving 🦃!

*Preparing Your Plants for Winter: 🌺

By now, most of your plants should be inside, whether in a warm greenhouse, basement, or dedicated plant room. Here are some tips to help your plants thrive during the colder months:

  • Light: Ensure your plants receive ample light, as they may not get the same intensity indoors.

  • Humidity: Consider using a humidifier to maintain the humidity levels that orchids love. This will also help reduce water loss through leaf transpiration.

  • Watering and Fertilizing: Cut back on both watering and fertilizing. Remember that some species, like Dendrobiums, Catasetinae, and Habenarias, require a dryer rest during the winter. Leaf Transpiration

  • Pest Control: Keep a close eye on your plants for pests. In confined spaces, bugs, viruses, bacteria, and fungal infections can spread quickly.

*Friendly Reminders:

  • Upcoming Event (November 21, 2024): (Speaker) Carrie Buchmann: 'TBD'

  • If you are bringing a plant for the display table, you may now prepare and print your Plant ID tag via this 'Plant ID Cards Link'.

*The CJOS meeting venue is at Trinity Church (33 Mercer St., Princeton, NJ 08540, (USA)). The meetings are held from 7pm - 8:30pm. All are welcome to attend a meeting; especially if it is your first time and introduction to CJOS. Grab a member and ask lots of questions about what CJOS is and how to join!
